Africa, a home to a remarkable variety of People and culture

Vision of the Future
Contributed by the Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak Malaysia

It gives me great pleasure to be part of the maiden edition of Mind Opener, the official magazine for the African Convention 2005. I would like to congratulate the African Students Association of INTI College Sarawak and the organising chairman, Mr. Anthony Claret on organising such an event. The fact that this convention is being held in Malaysia prompts us to take a look at how far our great nation has come. But then looking at how far we have come would not be beneficial if we do not also look at what the future holds. After all, vision is foresight with the advantage of hindsight.

We have become a powerhouse in information technology, thanks to the Multimedia Super Corridor. Other industries like manufacturing and export industries are also doing well. The fact that we are the number one exporter of palm oil in the world is no longer news. We have also managed to attract and retain several foreign investors and multi-national companies. We have a strong and stable currency which will ultimately give an edge in the world market. But we cannot just sit on these achievements and refuse to progress anymore.

Malaysians have made clear to the rest of the world that we are not ready to rest on our laurels. This message has echoed from the country's leadership. We have experienced immense success and economic growth though we realise that we are not there yet. Vision 2020 is within our grasp though not yet accomplished. Hence we will continue to strive for improvement.

One of the key factors that has brought us this far is the high degree of tolerance among various races in the country. And because our society is built on tolerance, integration and innovation, the future holds great things for us. It is possible for Malaysia to become a pioneer of the new world. It is possible for us to become a global giant and not just an Asian tiger.
